Consequences of improper e-waste disposal.

Why Recycle?

Recycling lamps, ballast, batteries, e-waste and mercury waste turns materials that would otherwise become waste into valuable resources. Recycling universal waste conserves our natural resources, it saves money, creates jobs, eliminates waste in landfills, reduces harm to the environment, protects human health and saves energy.

The world is facing both continuous growth in the amount of waste generated by human activities and the rising scarcity or depletion of natural resources. Under these circumstances, we must increasingly focus on recycling and reusing waste rather than on ways to dispose of it.

The conversion of waste into a resource is essential to alleviate the scarcity of resources and continue world growth, as well as to protect the planet's natural equilibrium.

In some states, there are legal alternatives for disposing of hazardous waste, like treatment, incineration or licensed hazardous waste landfills, in addition to recycling. But none of these options provides the added environmental benefits that are inherent to recycling.

Improper Disposal Has Consequences
Heavy metals in electronic equipment may cause the equipment to be considered a hazardous waste. Under Subtitle C of the Federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), hazardous waste must be properly identified, stored, transported, treated and disposed of.

A waste generator is responsible for proper disposal of its hazardous waste and for cleaning up the effects of improper disposal. Recycling reduces the potential for future liability.

Business waste fueled by e-waste is the fastest growing waste stream globally. This has been spurred by technological advances that drive the development of new products and the replacement of outdated equipment. Outdated equipment may contain hazardous materials including batteries or heavy metals, such as cadmium, lead, or mercury which can contaminate the environment if not disposed of properly.
